With the beautiful Balmoral Castle at its edge, Ballater holds its royal connections very close to its heart and many of the shops in the village can be seen displaying royal warrants of the Queen and Prince Charles. Other regal ties can be seen on the Royal Bridge over the River Dee and at the Old Royal Railway Station, which is now a Visitors’ Centre, displaying 100 years of the history of the Royal Family’s many holidays in this part of the country.
Known as the Jewel of the Cairngorms, the village itself is full of beautiful buildings housing specialist shops and charming tea rooms and the surrounding area of Aberdeenshire is a wonderful place to explore. Choose a cosy cottage in Ballater as your base and visit the famous Lochnagar Mountain. Nearby is a mile long footpath where you can walk at the water’s edge of Loch Muick, and try to spot majestic red deer on the land or golden eagles soaring in the sky.
