This stylish and cosy cottage makes a charming home for two on the outskirts of the Galloway Forest Park, an area of stunning wildlife habitats and natural landmarks. The RSPB reserve of the Wood of Cree is 4 miles away, and the pretty River Cree curls around the landscape offering plenty of opportunities for relaxing riverside walks.

One of three properties, this lovely, single-storey cottage, sits in an elevated position looking out over Cairnsmore Hill and the River Cree. The rooms enjoy the stunning views and are lovingly decorated in calming, neutral tones. Plus, the studio-style layout is spacious but cosy, ideal for making a romantic home.

Enter the semi-detached cottage to find the open-plan studio area. Begin at the calming lounge, inviting with carpeting and plush sofas. Up a small set of stairs is an elevated bedroom area - it feels separate and distinct from the lounge but enjoys the light and cosiness of the main space. The bed is king-size and the room is decorated in calming natural colours. The lounge leads into the conservatory, a delightfully sunny space, with views of the surrounding countryside. A comfy sofa and a dining table mean you can enjoy a meal and feel like you’re outside. The kitchen is a sweet open-plan space with every convenience you need to self-cater while you’re here.

Outside, you’ll find an enclosed garden and eating space complete with BBQ, so you can enjoy an al fresco meal in the fresh air surrounded by the rolling hills and valleys of Galloway.

The cottage enjoys an idyllic rural location, in the midst of gorgeous wildlife, scenic walks, and natural habitats, while sitting less than a mile from the sweet market town of Newton Stewart. Here you can enjoy browsing independent shops, trying out a local restaurant, or grabbing a coffee at a tearoom. The River Cree winds its way around the town, providing another delight of the area - fishing. Trout and salmon are available here, with lovely spots for fly fishing.

For more adventure and activity than you can shake a stick at (and there are plenty of those here), head north into the Galloway Forest Park, the outset of which lies just north of Newton Stewart. The parkland is full of all kinds of terrain and habitats, including the atmospheric Loch Tool and Wild Goat Park. As you can imagine, this is a popular place to visit where you can run into wild goats that live in the forest.

Beyond these sights, the forest is simply a magical place to get worn out - take a mountain biking trail, try a guided ranger walk to encounter red deer, or come out after dark and witness the darkest skies in Scotland, a truly romantic place to do a spot of stargazing before heading back to the cottage.

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Carty cottage. Easy to find in a picturesque setting. Our host made us feel very welcome with flowers and a bottle of wine on arrival. Located very close to the Galloway Forest Park with trails and walks short and long to suit all ages . Highly recommendable

This accommodation provided a very well equipped, comfortable refuge when the weather limited outdoor activities with easy parking and excellent Wi-Fi. The property is well placed for both easy access to the town and for exploring the area by car. Having the host on hand was reassuring and much appreciated. We have no hesitation in recommending thiRead mores cottage as an excellent base for exploring all that this area offers. Hide

Comfortable cottage, bigger than expected. Everything you could need provided and spotless. Only downside was not much of a view from inside cottage. View from garden is lovely. Well placed for visiting the Galloway Forest and the peninsula although driving involved for good walks. Very peaceful and quiet.
