Edinburgh, the cultural hub of Scotland, is a cosmopolitan and beautiful city famed worldwide for its superb round of annual festivals and architecture. The setting is wonderfully striking with the city perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky crags which rise from the generally flat landscape of the Lothians.

Edinburgh’s ability to capture the literary imagination has seen it dubbed a ‘World City of Literature’ by UNESCO, who have also conferred World Heritage Site status on much of the city centre. The main tourist attractions are Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat and Leith. The main festivals are the Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival which are a major draw in themselves. The city is also home to the National Gallery of Scotland and several smaller galleries.

Edinburgh offers a great night out for visitors with some fine quality restaurants, night clubs, music venues, pubs and cinemas to cover all tastes and sensibilities. The Lothians are the outlying areas, named East, West and Mid Lothian, to the south of the city and the Firth of Forth.

Check out The List for an up-to-date compilation of activities in and around the city.
