Portpatrick is an idyllic harbour town at the very westerly tip of Dumfries and Galloway. The ring of pretty pastel coloured houses line the curve of the harbour and the town is backed by sheltering coastal cliffs. Portpatrick harbour surrounds a peaceful bay; at night, the glow from the houses reflects onto the calm water creating a truly beautiful sight.
Just a short stroll to the south of the village and guarding the horizon are the ruins of Dunskey Castle dating from the 16th century. The trail to the castle takes in a steep climb and a route across a little bridge, and offers some stunning sea views from its cliff top location. Stay in a cottage in Portpatrick for a charming seaside holiday, the town itself is in a beautiful and peaceful location offering plenty of walks, being the start to the Southern Uplands Way, which runs all the way across to Scotland’s east coast.
